We stop somewhere in the middle of Manitoba. It's all deciduous trees, sharp boulders and crystal clear ponds out here. The tank was running low and we end up parked out front a crazy gas station. You know, half gift store half truck stop. It was ramshackle, made of lumber and decorated with hunting gear and fishing tackle. Behind the store is a resort of sorts, half a dozen trailers perched on a hill overlooking a muddy pond. Tiny mangy dogs yap at anyone who gets too close to their grim faced owners.
The rest stop had a whole shelf devoted to different kinds of seeds. The eating kind, but I’m pretty sure I saw a gardening section in one of the corners. I’m looking at the selection of sunflowers 1 cup 269 calories. They are a good source of protein and healthy fats, and they’re difficult to eat so you never eat too much. I’m always eating too much. I look at the way my thighs bulge and the fat on my stomach that keeps swelling more and more as this trip goes on. Too much junk food and not enough exercise.
I don't even know why I agreed to come on this road trip in the first place. Oh wait, I do. All my friends were going and I get such severe FOMO you wouldn't believe it. I grab a bag of unsalted sunflower seeds and turn to get a drink. I pass the first aid section and pause. I only stop long enough to check for laxatives. They do, the strong kind. Laxatives and long car trips don’t mix so I’ll have to save these for when we get to Vineyard. I end up getting a water, and a cup of drip coffee; they don’t have any cleanse drinks in a backwater place like this. I don’t even bother hiding my purchases, my trip-mates aren’t the kind of people to pay attention or even know what they mean.
We pile back into the van and rumble along beautiful tree lined highways, Birch trees flash their golden leaves as we zip by. Everyone is snacking on chips, chocolate bars and huge bags of candy. I sit in the back, huddled into the window, eating a fistful of sunflower seeds 223 calories as I drink cold watery gas station black coffee 25 calories. The mountains ahead are huge and purple in the light of the waning sun.
